TMS therapy is a non-invasive treatment that does not circulate through the body, so it avoids many of the side effects commonly associated with medications.
The most common side effect of TMS therapy is mild scalp pain or discomfort during treatment sessions. This can typically be managed with an over-the-counter pain reliever if needed. In rare cases where discomfort persists, your doctor can adjust the strength of the magnetic field pulses to enhance your comfort without compromising the effectiveness of treatment.Depression affects individuals differently, with a variety of symptoms that can vary from person to person. As a result, responses to TMS therapy can differ. That said, many patients report experiencing positive changes within the first one to two weeks of treatment. These changes often include:
-
Clearer thinking
-
Improved sleep patterns
-
Increased energy levels
-
Enhanced appetite
In many cases, these physical and cognitive improvements appear before noticeable changes in mood. While the timeline can vary, TMS therapy often provides steady progress over the course of treatment.

No, TMS therapy is entirely different from electric shock therapy (also known as electroconvulsive therapy or ECT). TMS uses magnetic fields to gently stimulate specific areas of the brain involved in mood regulation. Unlike ECT, TMS:
-
Does not cause seizures
-
Does not require anesthesia
-
Is a non-invasive procedure
During a TMS session, patients remain awake, alert, and comfortable, with no need for recovery time afterward.
